The World at Night project
The Milky Way, towards the bright galactic center in Scorpius & Sagittarius, above Mono Lake in California, known for its bizarre tufa towers; limestone formed by the precipitation of carbonate minerals in water. The lake is also home to a strange bacteria capable of incorporating the usually poisonous element arsenic into its biochemistry! The alien-like bacteria is the first discovered life-form that uses arsenic to make its DNA and proteins. It is a promising evidence that life might exist elsewhere in the universe.
This single-exposure image was photographed last June during my annual California Nightscapes workshop. The water was so still on those moments but a gentle breeze diffused the stars reflection, causing them to appear larger. Bright orange star Antares, the Scorpion’s heart, is the most notable on the water, followed by Saturn on the bottom edge.
