Photo by @andyparkinsonphoto //#strawssuck – I want to introduce you to @dalylizzie, an inspirational wildlife biologist, TV presenter and ambassador for the Marine Conservation Society. Lizzie has set up a campaign called Do You Suck Cardiff and she is seeking to get plastic straws banned from as many pubs, clubs, bars and restaurants as she can in her home town of Cardiff in Wales. With a great many more environmentally friendly alternatives, such as paper straws, it is a damning indictment of humanity’s continuing stupidity and convenient ignorance that we continue poison our oceans so egregiously and so unnecessarily. Even plastic straws that claim to be biodegradable to not break down properly as the water in the marine environment is too cold, not to mention the still as yet unknown consequences of all of the carcinogenic chemicals that leach from the degrading plastics into our oceans. For those of you that, like me, are passionate about trying wherever possible to make a positive contribution then you help to promote this important initiative by using the hashtags #strawssuck and #doyousuckCardiff. As heart-breaking as all of this can seem sometimes it is important to remember that there are good people out there, working tirelessly to promote important environmental issues and I for one, as a former Cardiff resident, will do all that I can to help Lizzie champion this vital initiative.
