Glass artist Lino Tagliapietra used a 500-year-old technique to create this piece.
With the "incalmo" method, different glass bubbles (like the blue and the yellow) are joined together to create a more distinctive work. You can also see examples of Tagliapietra's trademark "coldworking" techniques, where patterns are cut into the glass after it has cooled.

Tagliapietra is widely revered as a master of glass blowing. He decided to become a self-styled studio artist after breaking from the factory system in Murano, Italy, where he worked for more than 40 years. "Mandara" (2005) is on view now in our @americanartmuseum's #RenwickGallery.
