Photograph by David Chancellor @chancellordavid - A sedated grevy’s zebra is fitted with a satellite transmitting collar Lekurruki Community Conservancy, northern Kenya - the Zebra is blindfolded to minimise stress during the collaring process - Once released it’s movement will be monitored by scientists. Data from the collars provide fine-grained movement information that allows us to understand how Grevy’s zebra respond to the different variables in their range and how we can use these results for enhanced conservation planning. Grevy’s zebra are in crisis and numbers have declined rapidly. Towards the end of the 1970s the global population of Grevy's zebra was estimated to be approximately 15,000 animals; a recent survey estimated approximately 2,800 animals representing more than an 80% decline in global numbers over the past four decades, this has been primarily due to poaching, killing for meat, and also loss of access to critical resources due to competition with domestic livestock - I’m currently teaching photography to National Geographic explorers, at the National Geographic Sciencetelling Bootcamp @natgeo #sciencetelling #natgeofestlondon exciting new workshop giving hands-on training, teaching them how to communicate their extraordinary work through photography, video, social media, writing and public speaking. This is the third year of the program, but the first time in London.
