The Narrows hike may be one of the most iconic in the American Southwest. 275 million years ago, this area of land was actually under the ocean, but through the processes of geologic uplift, erosion, and volcanic activity, this incredible canyon was created. In some areas, the walls of the canyon reach upwards of a thousand feet (305 meters). If you would like to check out the Narrows for yourself, be aware that there is no trail, and that hiking through the sometimes thigh deep water over slippery rocks is necessary. Many people enjoy hiking The Narrows in the late Spring and Summer when water levels are manageable, and the water temperature is at its warmest. Always be sure to check in with the National Park System for potential flash flood warnings before heading out. This photo was taken midday, when the sun filters through the canyon, filling it with unique colors, shadows and light patterns.
