In “Silent,” a film by artist-duo Pauline Boudry and Renate Lorenz, transsexual vocalist Aérea Negrot performs John Cage’s infamous “4’33,” a musical score made of four minutes and thirty-three seconds of silence. Ironically, this film is anything but silent. Negrot sips water, smokes a cigarette, and straightens her dress while in the center of a busy Berlin park, all of which produces atmospheric noises. The park, the location of many of Berlin’s immigration protests, also sets the stage for the ending of the film, during which Negrot sings directly to “Mr. President” about the meaning and purpose of political violence. Visit gallery 179 and listen for yourself.
