Incredible news today of one of the greatest conservation success stories of our time. Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and @kristine_tompkins signed the largest public/private national park donation in history, making good on a pledge made in 2017 by creating Pumalín National Park and Patagonia National Park Chile. Over 1M acres donated by @tompkins_conservation was greatly expanded upon by 9M from the Chilean government to create 10M acres of new national park lands. That’s an area bigger than Switzerland, open to the public to experience and preserved in continuation. Congrats to all!
Pictured here, I’m flying a moving time-lapse of the Valle Chacubuco part of the iconic Parque Patagonia, one of 8 parks in total from the new designation. Sitting in this vast landscape teeming with life, getting blasted by wind, surrounded by herds of wild Guanacos, dappled in patches of fast moving light… these are memories that seer the importance of today’s good news in me.
