Tree swallows like this one photographed at Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary in Wisconsin are quite common throughout North America. They weigh less than one ounce, yet many have the strength to fly all the way from Mexico to nesting grounds in Canada. For some that's more than 1,864 miles (3,000 km)! They feed mostly on insects and forage during flight, often soaring low over water or fields. These birds are hardier than most swallows and are capable of surviving off of seeds and berries during colder weather.
During courtship, a male tree swallow will show females potential nesting sites they have already claimed. These include cavities of trees, nest boxes, abandoned nests of other birds, even holes in the ground. Though both parents share the task of feeding their nestlings, many adults find new mates each year.
Follo @Joel Sartore to see a portrait of this little bird!
