Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto // Mute swan family at dawn – I’ve been motivated and inspired to post this image because of a post that I read recently from @elisabethontheroad. Elisabeth talked openly and honestly about some of the vagaries of image sharing on Social Media and the temptation perhaps to chase likes over content. This is a trap that I must admit to have fallen into recently, not least because these ‘small in the frame’ images usually tend to perform much less well on Instagram simply because the overwhelming majority of people view these images on a smartphone. What I’ve come to realise of course is that, as well as sharing images that I hope will get more people to connect with our wild cousins it’s also important that I post a wide variety of images that hopefully reflect my vision or my interpretation of what I see. This image for example I have never posted anywhere yet it is one of my favourites, not least because it has a painterly quality to it. I took it a couple of years ago at a lake close to home and I‘ve used the reflection to try and balance the image and to complete the whole scene. What you see reflected in the water is the reflection of a brightly sunlit field, viewed through a gap among some lakeside trees. I couldn’t include the field itself as it was simply too bright and, had I exposed as I have here for the swan family then the field would have blown out significantly. Of course the reflection in the water is significantly darker and so it actually helps to add interest and detail to the otherwise featureless water. What disappoints me about the image is that it took me so long to notice the possibilities in the first place, several years if I’m being honest but the opportunity is at least repeatable and I shall be spending at least a little bit of time with my swans again this year.
