Video by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz This is one of eight rotary milking parlors at Bengbu Farm in Anhui province, China, which I believe to be the world’s largest dairy farm. They had 39,000 holsteins in a vertically integrated dairy operation that processes and packages its own products on site. The starter cows here came from Australia, the semen for artificial insemination comes from Canada, and the cows feed on locally grown silage which they supplement with alfalfa imported from Utah. To photograph here I had to wear a tyvek bunny suit, and a pair of their white rubber boots. Sanitation standards were much higher than anything I’ve seen at commercial dairies in the US or Europe. A 200ml liter bottle of their (very tasty) milk sells for about $1.25, a premium product for the Chinese market. With rapidly expanding incomes, China is consuming increasing amounts of protein and dairy products, and has become the world’s largest importer of agricultural products.
