German artist #JosephBeuys was an aircraft radio operator in World War II. In 1944, his plane was shot down in Russia, and he created the myth that cites his rescue by a small community of nomadic Tatars as the defining moment in his life as an artist. Beuys claims that they covered his body in fat and wrapped him in felt to keep him warm. Fat and felt would later pervade his work, signifying survival as well as physical and spiritual nourishment. Discuss more about Beuys’s felt suit at this week's Spotlight Gallery Conversations Friday and Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
