A Florida Manatee hovers near the surface of Florida’s Crystal River, while another sleeps on the river bottom below. These animals need warm water to survive and typically move from ocean habitats in summer months to warmer freshwater springs and rivers in winter. Manatees are threatened in the wild by a variety of factors, from boat strikes and red tide to the loss of warm water springs and sea grass due to climate change. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, 520 manatees were found dead in waterways across the state in 2016, marking the third deadliest year since record keeping began. Of these deaths, at least 104 were watercraft-related.
Despite these alarming numbers, in 2017 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service downgraded protections for the species from “endangered” to “threatened,” citing an overall increases in manatee populations.

At least 80% of Florida manatees have been hit by boats - some repeatedly - and these beautiful creatures often bear scars on their bodies.
