This year marks the centennial of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, the most powerful and important bird-protection law ever passed. These “Painted Buntings” are part of the Smithsonian bird collection
Painted Buntings breed in two separate areas of the United States: the eastern population breeds along the southeast coast (North and South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida) the western population breeds in the southern and central Midwest (Kansas and Missouri south to Texas and Louisiana)

These birds are Neotropical and migrate to Florida, Bahamas, Cuba, Mexico, Costa Rica and western Panama during winter.
One of the biggest factors in Painted Bunting decline is habitat loss, both on breeding grounds and migration sites. They are highly vulnerable to cowbird parasitism.
This photograph was made for a National Geographic story titled “Decline of the Songbird” in 1993. The story focuses on the myriad causes of neotropical songbird population decline.
