READ the second picture (excerpt of his autobiography)... now more significant, more relevant, more needed than ever. ••• Nelson Mandela, leader of the movement to end South African apartheid, is released from prison after 27 years today on February 11, 1990. Mandela spent the first 18 of his 27 years in jail at the brutal Robben Island Prison. Confined to a small cell without a bed or plumbing and forced to do hard labor. He could write and receive a letter once every six months, and once a year he was allowed to meet with a visitor for 30 minutes. However, Mandela’s resolve remained unbroken.... Upon his release, he said this... “The policy of apartheid created a deep and lasting wound in my country and my people. All of us will spend many years, if not generations, recovering from that profound hurt. Perhaps it requires such depth of oppression to create such heights, of character”. ••• I can only hope that the actions and words of this man inspire us and reassures us that we have only one obligation in this life and it is to love each other and see each other (our people, humanity) profoundly.
