Valentine’s Day is a day on which people celebrate love, exchange gifts, flowers, or letters with their loved ones. But did you know that Valentine’s Day in Japan is significantly different in comparison to others?
.
It is a dominant tradition that on the 14th of February of every year Japanese women give presents or chocolate to men to state their true love. There are actually 8 different types of chocolates, 6 of which are recent additions, that people - depending on the relationship that the giver has with the receiver - give each other:
.
1.Honmei Choco - Chocolates given to a boyfriend, husband, lover, or someone who one has romantic feelings for.
2.Giri Choco - These are obligation chocolates given to people such as friends, bosses, work colleagues as a sign of gratitude.
3.Sewa Choco - Chocolates for those who have taken care of the sender
4.Fami Choco - Chocolates given to family members.
5.Tomo Choco - “Friendship Chocolates” given between female friends.
6.Gohoubi Choco - also known as “My Chocolate” or “Jibun Choco” are chocolates for oneself.
7.Gyaku Choco - Chocolates that men gives to women, a contradiction to Japanese Valentine’s Day tradition.
8.Homo Choco - Chocolates that men give to other men.
