Her parents, Anush and Grigory, pictured with Maria’s godparents and grandmother, received a wedding and first baby payment of approximately 765 euros as part of the government's Birth Encouragement Program,  an initiative that hoped to spark a baby boom there. Nagorno-Karabakh, a de facto independent republic, is internationally recognized as a part of Azerbaijan.
