On the day of this photo, approximately 15 adults living with mental health issues were chained to trees or posts while they waited to be cured through prayer. Some had been chained for more than a year. - 81.2% of Togo’s rural population lives below the poverty line making it one of the world’s poorest countries. Poverty is often both a symptom and a cause of a mental health issues. To make matters worse, care is almost always substandard in regions struggling with poverty. In Togo, where resources are thin and conventional medicine and professional advice is difficult to access, many turn to traditional healers or religious leaders for cures. Around the world, an overwhelming majority of people with mental and psychosocial disabilities are living in poverty, poor physical health and are subject to human rights violations. - #inmyworld is designed to expose the challenges faced by people living with mental health issues and give them the chance to be seen, heard and valued. @witness_change is a nonprofit that aims to improve life for excluded groups by amplifying their stories.
