This Norwegian style Church was built far from home, it still stands incongruously among the mountains of the island of South Georgia in the South Atlantic Ocean. It follows the Lutheran tradition and was finished in 1913. It was built for the community of whalers who lived and worked in the port of Grytviken during the early 1900s. Other nearby Norwegian influences included a ski ramp for winter sport. The funeral of the renowned explorer Ernest Shackleton was held there in 1922 and he was later buried in the churchyard nearby. The church has been restored and is maintained and kept open for visitors alongside a museum of the island’s incredible history. Swipe across to see other views of the church.
