This papyrus is from an ancient Egyptian ‘Book of the Dead’ – a compilation of spells designed to guide the deceased through the dangers of the underworld, ensuring their eternal life. It was made for a royal scribe – Hunefer – who lived around 1200 BC. These books had lots of colourful illustrations, but in this scene there are also hieroglyphs that help tell the story.
