Join us at Wednesday Nights on March 14 6:30 p.m. for a premiere screening of “The Montiers: An American Story,” a short documentary produced by WHYY in collaboration with the Museum. In 1841, Hiram and Elizabeth Brown Montier were married and celebrated their union by having elegant wedding portraits painted. Over 175 years later, these extremely rare paintings—the earliest surviving portraits of an African American couple—hang in the Museum galleries. The film explores the Montier and Morrey families, their role in Philadelphia, and the artwork that survives today. Featuring comments from descendant William Pickens III as well as curators and scholars, the film's screening will be followed by a conversation and audience Q&A. Included in Pay What You Wish admission. Seating is first come, first served.
