Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto /@thephotosociety Redwings fighting – It might seem strange to many people that whilst wildlife photographers capture moments of explosive behaviour such as these a great many of them, this one included, happened far too quickly for the eye to perceive. As such I never actually experienced this brief moment and it was only reviewing my images later, about 10 seconds later, that I could begin to see what had unfolded. After a laborious 6 hour wait in a hide I had by about 3pm not taken a single image. Nevertheless a large flock of redwings and fieldfares had gathered in my neighbours apple trees, no doubt tempted by the glut of windfall apples that lay on my neighbours’ lawn. When the birds did finally descend from the trees I had already seen a couple of confrontations but then I could see one building right in front of me. The bird at left was submissive, hunkered and withdrawn whereas the one at right, the aggressor, stood tall and focussed. I locked my focus on the bird at left as I figured that he’d be the one less likely to move but left my aperture at an extremely narrow F4, the cluttered garden backdrop I felt needed to remain out-of-focus. As the tension built so did my nerves so I drew my eye away from the viewfinder and watched the action through the hide window instead. As soon as I saw a flinch from the bird at right I simply fired a burst and this one, luckily, had both birds pin-sharp. In terms of what I actually witnessed with my own eyes then I saw little more than a blur as the two birds came together, one of the reasons I guess why I so love the dramatic nature of still photography.
