Here is a quick quiz for opera aficionados. Is Italy’s biggest opera house in Milan, Venice or Palermo? While Milan’s La Scala may have more seats, and La Fenice in la Venezia is more venerable by a century, Palermo’s Teatro Massimo is easily the biggest in Italy. It was envisioned as 19th-century Palermo’s bid for European cultural credibility, when both Sicily and Italy were booming. But it took 33 years to plan and build. #TeatroMassimo was closed for renovations in 1974, when the Mafia’s power in Sicily was such that mob bosses appointed the Palermo mayor. (The mayor of Palermo is also the president of the city-owned Teatro’s board.) Reformers blamed the corruption and Mafia domination for the city’s degradation, and nothing symbolized that more than Teatro Massimo, which remained closed for 23 years. Since 1997, though, the Teatro has been staging a mix of classical and innovative productions, in ballet, opera and classical music. When the opera struggled to distinguish itself on the international stage, it tried something new, becoming an early pioneer in live-streaming its performances. “The theater is for all, not for the few,” said Francesco Giambrone, a medical doctor by training who now administers the Teatro. “That is the principal mistake Italian theater made in the past, to close itself off and restrict to an elite.” @giannicipriano took this photo inside #TeatroMassimo.
