Worn as a symbol of status since antiquity, these three-dimensional sculptures, carved into stones in raised relief, entered the realm of fashion in the 19th century when they were worn as decorative pieces of jewellery. Today, they continue to appeal to jewellery lovers and when mixed with contemporary fashion, they come alive again as unique pieces of artistry and beauty. The 20 March sale features an impressive group of early-19th century cameos by the greatest gem-engravers of their time, including Guiseppe Girometti, Nicolo Morelli, Filippo Rega and Nathaniel Marchant.
