Photos by @shonephoto (Robbie Shone) - At night, the Mulu rainforest in Sarawak, Malaysia is filled with a chorus of insect call. For most of their lives, Cicadas live underground as nymphs at depths ranging from about 30 centimetres (0.98 ft) down to 2.5 metres (8.2 ft). In the final stages as a nymph they construct an exit tunnel to the surface and emerge, find a nearby plant and then molt, shedding their exoskeleton. The katydid (Tettigoniidae) produces a piercing eerie violin-like sound by rubbing its wings together, one of the first evening sounds I remember to start up from the Bornean rainforest. We then spotted this species of tree frog (Collet's Tree Frog, Polypedates colletti) clinging to the vines of a small tree in search of food. It feeds on worms, insects and other bugs.
