In the aftermath of the Feb. 14 killings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, journalists and law enforcement officers swarmed Parkland, Fla., as the city became the site of America's latest mass shooting. The suspected gunman was in custody. The 17 lives lost were mourned. The country was jolted into another reckoning. Two days after the shooting, @gdemczuk photographed 17 crosses that had been placed at Pine Trails Park before the candlelight vigil that recalled the victims. She returned a few weeks later to find that each cross was surrounded by flowers and other objects, protected from the rain by individual canopies. Her before-and-after images of the memorials and the media staging area for stand ups and press conferences—the closest anyone could get to the school—illustrate the overlooked evolution of public mourning.
