We’re celebrating Ellen Gallagher for today's Women's History Month post.
"In much of my work, there is this idea of the gigantic, but in a miniaturized form. In terms of the subject matter, it can be something awful that’s then reduced to a very minute observation, maybe a specific gesture or specific narrative. But it can also be in terms of the form, the way that the 'Watery Ecstatic' drawings are made, which is much like my version of scrimshaw."

Since 2001 Ellen Gallagher has continued to add to her ongoing series entitled "Watery Ecstatic," which consists of assorted drawings of marine life, some scientific and others imaginary. Gallagher relates her labor-intensive cut-paper process to scrimshaw (the illustrative scroll work, engravings, and carvings done in bone or ivory).
