Photo: @andy_mann // Famed oceanographer, Jacques Cousteau, was once asked what species of shark he found to be most dangerous. He responded by saying that the oceanic whitetip is the “most dangerous of all sharks” noting the occurrence of attacks on shipwreck survivors. Yet, in the five years I’ve spent with this species with hundreds of hours in the water with them, I’ve only experienced beautiful and calm interactions. If we could only show them as much respect and grace in return. Between environmental pressures, shark finning and a slow reproductive rate, oceanic whitetip sharks are in serious threat of becoming extinct. They are highly valued for their meat and skin hides as well and are very susceptible to long line fleets. It is important that we learn as much as we can about these amazing predators and help change the way the world thinks about and views sharks.
