Kula Lodge in Central #Maui is as much a time capsule as a hotel. It opened in 1951 and is known for its rustic, kitschy charm, including rocking chairs and floral bedspreads. The property’s 5 cottages, each with its own fireplace and balcony, offer sweeping views of the neighboring islands. While on assignment for @tmagazine, @jleavjleav captured the view from the lodge, with Maalaea Bay in the distance. ?Central Maui — a verdant expanse of misty hills punctuated with tiny, preserved-in-amber towns — is mostly ignored by sunbathers and surfers. It became an agricultural center in the late 1700s. There aren’t as many paniolos (Hawaiian cowboys) today, but several big ranches remain, as does an appreciation for living off the land: In addition to the ranches, Central Maui boasts coffee farms, lavender fields and scenic hiking loops. Follow @tmagazine to find out where to stay (and what to eat) in Maui’s Upcountry.
