Previously owned by actress Elizabeth Taylor, Vincent van Gogh’s ‘Vue de l’asile et de la Chapelle de Saint-Rémy’ will be offered in our upcoming Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale in New York.⠀

The painting, executed with Van Gogh’s thick and active brushstroke, presents a unique view of the asylum where the artist spent his final month. It is the only depiction of the building that he painted en plein air.⠀

In 1963, London art dealer Francis Taylor purchased ‘Vue de l’asile’ at auction on behalf of his daughter Elizabeth – two months before the premiere of her most famous film, the epic ‘Cleopatra’. The painting remained in the living room of her Bel Air home until her death in 2011.⠀
