I first went there in summer of 2002. There was no road and we had to cross river creeks in a beat-up UAZ, a Soviet military 'jeep'. It took us hours to get there as we kept getting stuck rivers and skidding along the muddy mountain pathways. When we finally arrived, I was amazed to see how the village preserved itself, retaining its cultural identity for centuries. However in 2006 a new asphalted mountain road was built to alleviate the hardships connected with severe weather and inaccessibility. This year at the end of winter, I went back to Khinaliq. From the top of the village I saw tin rooftops and plastic doors and windows installed on ancient homes. Many traditional structures built with river stone were demolished and replaced by brick homes. The face of the village has transformed forever, but there are two sides to this story. While people’s lifestyle improved, the cultural identity of this unique place got compromised. Here are the two views of the Khinaliq village sixteen years apart. My photographer's heart aches to see this transformation. #khinaliq #village #progress #lifestyle #change #tradition #history #azerbaijan #myfavoritevillage @unesco
