Great crested grebe courtship – The courtship dance of the great crested grebe is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful events in UK natural history. This image was taken a few years ago at a time when the concentration of breeding pairs on this lake was at its highest and one pair was constantly displaying right in front of where I sat. This event has never been repeated and serves as a constant reminder to me of the importance of acting immediately when you see something special. So often in wildlife photography I will hear ‘I’ll do that next year’ as the easy assumption to make is that, if you witness something special one year then all you have to do is turn up at the same time the following year and the event will be repeated. Of course this never happens though I do think that sometimes the very act of witnessing an event somehow makes it seem normal, predictable or familiar. It’s only years later, having never seen the same behaviour again, that one realises just how special the event was that you witnessed in the first place. Please do not procrastinate with your photography and rather than find or make excuses not to photograph then flip it on its head and do the opposite. Make excuses to photograph, realise that there is no such thing as bad weather and if you start to see something special then act on it immediately. If you put it off until next year it might very well be the worst decision that you'll make.
