The Urus of Puñaca Tinta María, a small village living in the northeastern shore of the dried-up Lake Poopó in Bolivia's altiplano, after a meeting to discuss water supply for the community, the main issue for them. An estimated 5,000 Urus remain today, and fewer than a thousand lived around Poopó before it went dry. Some have gone to work in textile and garment factories in Chile and Argentina; others have moved to cities and taken jobs as day laborers or work underground as miners extracting tin, lead, silver, and other metals. A few dozen have headed off to what may be the future of their beloved Poopó—working in the salt mines of Salar de Uyuni. Follow @limauricio to see more of his work around the world.
