Are these the droids you’re looking for? We’re kicking off #RobotWeek with two of the most popular objects in our robotics collection: C-3PO and R2-D2. Don’t know what they are? We find your lack of Star Wars knowledge disturbing. R2-D2 and C-3PO, two droids, appear in all nine Star Wars films. Based on Ralph McQuarrie’s artwork, the two robots are opposites of each other. R2-D2 is brave, C-3PO tentative; C-3PO is talkative, R2-D2 terse. R2-D2 looks like a machine, C-3PO resembles a human. In the films, the duo guide, rescue, and (at times) frustrate their human counterparts. Actor Anthony Daniels wore this C-3PO costume in “Return of the Jedi,” and at times actor Kenny Baker sat in an R2-D2 costume like this one also from “Return of the Jedi.” (There were also remotely controlled R2-D2 units used for filming). Since Star Wars premiered in 1977, it has become immensely popular and a cultural touchstone. Conceived at a time when robots inhabited the imaginative worlds of science fiction rather than the real world, R2-D2 and C-3PO represented the enduring dream of having robots as personal servants. Today, real robots are more numerous. This week we’ll explore some of the robots in our collection. [© 1977 Lucasfilm Ltd.
