Photo by @erikalarsen888 (Erika Larsen) // Captured #withGalaxy S8, produced with @samsungmobileusa using F 1.7 Aperture in Pro Mode // The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) can be found throughout the coastal plains of the southeastern United States. Alligators primarily inhabit freshwater swamps and marshes as well as ponds, rivers and lakes. Alligators are an important part of the Everglades ecosystem. The nesting activity of female alligators creates peat and several turtle species can incubate their eggs inside alligator nests. Water can remain in alligator holes throughout the year and as the dry season approaches the retained water allows alligator holes to become a refuge for a variety of wildlife. Hunting and loss of habitat caused the severe decline of the American alligator population and was listed as an endangered species in 1967 under a law that preceded the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Alligators were removed from the list in 1987 and are continuing to thrive in Florida today.
