#WorkoftheWeek: When writer Mary Hutchinson sat for Vanessa Bell in 1915, she was the mistress of Bell’s husband Clive – a fact of which Bell was aware. It has been commented that this may account for the unflattering nature of the portrait. When exhibited, Bell wrote ‘It’s perfectly hideous... and yet quite recognisable’.
