Don't worry—that's not a robot inside our numismatics vault. It's just a scanner, although a very powerful one. Last month, our colleagues over at @smithsonian3d visited our numismatics collection in order to conduct an experiment: 3D-scanning coins and medals.
The coin under the bright lights? It's a Korean Sang P’yŏng T’ong Bo coin. In the 1600s, these coins became the major coinage of Korea, and they remained so for over 200 years. There are over 5,000 variations of these coins, and we have many examples of them in our collections. Several of them (like the final image above) have retained their bright enamel colors. Our numismatics team recently profiled many of the Korean coins in the collection on our blog: https://s.si.edu/korean-coins
Make sure to follow @smithsonian3d to see their latest work!
