These colorful bands formed some 530 million years ago as deposits of silty mud in a shallow sea. Because it is easily eroded this layer is primarily responsible for the retreat of the canyon rim. Seeing time compressed into such a vivid physical form is a one of the great experiences of visiting the Grand Canyon.
