Photo by @amivitale. Najin relaxes with a flock of oxpecker on her back. The oxpecker rest on the back of rhino, ridding them of pests like ticks, flies and other bugs and give off loud warning hisses when they see danger, providing a kind of alarm system, while also taking little sips of blood from the large mammal. Najin is the daughter of Sudan, the last male white rhino who passed away on Mar. 19, and the mother of Fatu. Najin and Fatu are the last northern white rhino in all the world. Along with Sudan, they were transported from the Dvůr Králové Zoo (@safari_park_dvur_Kralove) in the Czech Republic to Ol Pejeta Conservancy (@olpejeta) in Kenya’s plains in a last ditch effort to encourage them to breed and save the species. The air, water, and food, not to mention room to roam, might stimulate them to breed—and the offspring would then be used to repopulate Africa. At the time there were eight northern white rhino in the world. Now there are two. Yet all hope is not lost. Scientists believe they can bring the species back from the brink of extinction using IVF and stem cell science and are working toward that end. Whether science can save the species is unknown but my hope is that Sudan's legacy can be a HUGE wake up call for all of us. We can all make impacts in our own small ways for a world of co existence.
