Yamazaki Choun was one of the most eminent Japanese sculptors of the early 20th century.

Keen to learn Western techniques to achieve realistic representation in sculpture, Choun was one of the first Japanese artists to employ the Pointing Machine to transfer a plaster cast into wood sculpture.⠀

In 1952, he was awarded Person of Cultural Merit (Bunka Korosha), an annual prize for an individual for outstanding contributions to Japanese culture.
