Happy #NationalDolphinDay! A spinner dolphin leaps from the sea as a passing morning squall leaves behind a rainbow in the sky off Oahu, Hawaii. After humans, dolphins have the largest brain relative to body size in the animal kingdom, but their world is vastly different than our own. Dolphins see much of their world acoustically, using echolocation (sonar) to determine objects and distances. When they sleep, they keep half of their brain awake, as they are voluntary breathers and must remain vigilant for predators. But what else are they doing with those big brains in the sea? In the time ahead, perhaps the answer to this question will be revealed.

Spending time with dolphins is a privilege, but as with all wildlife photography, patience is key in producing unique images.
