These incredible animals are critically endangered and like many of Africa’s big animals are constantly under threat of poaching and the encroachment of humans. Amazingly, conservation efforts have managed to increase their numbers to some degree but the risk for them remains. It is hard to describe the experience of seeing them in their natural habitat, after all they are one of our closest relatives and being in their presence is extremely powerful.
