William Trost Richards’s earliest explorations in the watercolor medium were highly detailed botanical subjects, such as these two examples. The flower study features opaque watercolor, carefully applied within pencil outlines, while in the plant study Richards used white opaque watercolor to create accents and highlights. Both studies include annotations regarding the date and scale and the type of plant, which suggest that they are literal transcriptions from nature. See Richards's Experiments in Watercolor On view in our #LuceVisibleStorage through September 9.⠀
