Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Mountain hare grooming – I’ve recently confirmed that I will be returning to Scotland next February-March to again head into the mountains for 5 weeks to work with these astonishing mammals. If experiencing these animals for yourselves, occasionally at extremely close quarters, is something in which you’d be interested then please do feel free to get in touch with me at [email protected] Places will be a strict first come basis and as places fill extremely quickly I’d urge you to get in touch as soon as possible. This image was captured during a fantastic session with a favourite hare, Mrs Grey and the conditions, though extremely challenging, were perfect for producing dramatic and unusual images. Gale force winds and driving snow kept meant that we were completely alone on the mountains and as all hares do in these extreme conditions she sat with her back to the wind. As we sat with her, fighting off the numbing cold for as long as we could a snowdrift slowly formed up her back, coating her thick fur with snow and giving the images and extra element of interest. Periodically she would sit up, shake the snow off and have a wash, as she is doing here, before settling down again to sit out the weather. Speaking anthropomorphically one could suggest that she looks like she is praying, perhaps for a lull in the ferocity but I do at least like the neat form of her feet, the relatively peaceful looking appearance and of course the snow-filled fur. She was certainly coping with the cold so much better than the shivering humans who were sitting just a few feet away.
