Life with @ancestral_guard #YurokNation doesn’t disappoint. Check them out! ~

Words by @gatherfilm director @mrsanjayr ~

A baby gray whale and its mother frolic just outside a large sandbar that blocks the mouth of the mighty Klamath River in Northern California. Before the river was dammed, the water level behind the sandbar was noticeably higher and gray whales, killer whales and even great white sharks drifted into the freshwater. Now with reduced flows, sandbars have accumulated, slowing down the flow of eels and fish into the Rivermouth as well. We were out on the sandbar with the @ancestral_guard who in their infinite eagerness were armed with eel hooks and drift nets, although spring salmon season has yet to start and the eel were blocked by sand. They brought out a crew of young indigenous men and women from as far up the Klamath as Oregon to see the diverse ways the Yurok harvested the sea life. @sammygensaw joked that “back in the day if a whale breeched itself we would invite our Tolowa brothers and sisters down to help us butcher. They were master whalers and we did ceremonies while they helped harvest the meat.” With @sammygensaw @uriahcheng @jonlukegensaw @zechariah_gabel @weesh_com
