Want to spend 99+ years in Venice? Here’s your chance. In March, a call for bids appeared on Venice’s municipal website. It went something like this: “To let: 4 small lots with a 99-year (renewable) lease, on an exclusive Venetian island. Fixer-uppers. Illustrious neighbors: Igor Stravinsky, Joseph Brodsky, Emilio Vedova.” 4 chapel tombs in the cemetery of San Michele are up for grabs. The cemetery, Venice’s “isle of the dead,” was built after Napoleon’s administration ordered the residents of #Venice to bury their dead outside the city center. For more than 200 years, it has been a final resting place for Venetians, as well as a few chosen foreigners. Now, that honor will go to the highest bidders. But if you’re interested, be forewarned: The chapels need considerable work and will require eternal care. And they aren’t cheap. The cemetery’s Testolini Quadri Chapel, photographed here by @nadiashiracohen, is being auctioned with a base price of more than €256,000 ($300,000). It sleeps, so to speak, 2 corpses and countless funerary urns for ashes or bones. Visit the link in our profile to get the details.
