A rusting graveyard or a forest of opportunity? Battered first by the march of technology and lately by the elements in junkyards, Britain’s iconic #phoneboxes are staging a comeback. The original cast-iron boxes with the domed roofs first appeared in 1926 and began disappearing in the 1980s. About that time, Tony Inglis’s engineering and transport company got the job to remove them and auction them off. But, hearing calls to preserve the kiosks, he ended up buying hundreds of them himself. “They are everything that you wouldn’t do today,” he said. “They’re big, heavy.” Today, the iconic red booths are once again a familiar sight — and they’re serving all kinds of purposes. ☎️ Swipe left to see @andrew_testa’s photos of (1) a phone box in Lewisham, South London, that houses a community library (2) a #phonebox defibrillator, which can help save lives in areas where medical help can be slower to arrive (3) and a mini LovePhone mobile phone repair shop in a London kiosk.
