The island fox is approximately one third smaller than its ancestor, the gray fox. They can be found on six of the eight Channel Islands off the coast of California. In the 1990s this species experienced a deadly decline. As the bald eagle started to become endangered it’s prey, the golden eagle, started to jump in population. The golden eagle is the island fox’s natural predator, which led to more fox hunting. In 1999, the Channel Islands National Park began a recovery program and now the population is restored! These foxes live on.
