The Vestmannaeyjar Islands may not seem like much but they are home to some resilient people, almost 5,000 to be exact. One of the most volcanically active areas in the world, one of its 15 Islands (Surtsey) was created by an underwater volcano erupting in 1963. In 1975 the Eldfell volcano erupted on the main island evacuating the entire population to the mainland. Lava flow destroyed a large part of the town until 6.8 billion liters of seawater was used to slow it down.
