June is #PrideMonth—discover Catherine Opie's “Dyke" (1993) from her early series "Portraits" (1993-1997), which celebrates the queer communities in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Opie photographed transgender people, drag queens, and leather dykes with great solemnity and formality, using historical traditions of studio portraiture to upend heterosexual norms of identity and sexuality. As part of a community that was not represented in mainstream American culture, Opie sought to provide visibility and representation to her friends and the community at large.
