Located in the Mexican state of Campeche, deep in the jungles of the greater Petén basin of the Yucatán Peninsular, Calakmul has a long, illustrious history, with excavations unearthing evidence of habitation from c. 600BCE. Calakmul's zenith is considered to have been in the Late Classic Period (542–695 CE), yet by around 900 CE Calakmul was no longer a city with significant influence. Almost 7,000 distinct ancient structures have been identified at the site, the largest of which (photographed here) is Structure 2, a massive triadic pyramid (consisting of a dominant structure flanked by two smaller inward-facing buildings, all mounted upon a single platform). Standing at over 45m (c.150ft) high it is one of the largest of Maya pyramids; its base covers over 120 square metres (390 sq ft). Four tombs have been located within the pyramid. More than a dozen reservoirs have also been identified at the site, the combined capacity of which has been estimated at over 200 million litres. In the absence of evidence that the water was used to irrigate crops, it is estimated that the supply could have supported 50,000 to 100,000 people. Throughout much of it's later history, Calakmul maintained an intense rivalry with Tikal, another major Maya city state, and the political manoeuvrings of these two polities have been likened to a struggle between two superpowers.
